Naming Nonsense
As confusing as it might be I’m going to try my best to explain it.
Within Dungeons and Dragons there exists the Domains of Dread. The Domains of Dread are also known as Ravenloft because of the original Advanced Dungeons and Dragons book of the same name. Barovia is the name of one Domain of Dread. Curse of Strahd takes place within the Domain of Barovia.
So Barovia is a Domain of Dread within Ravenloft (aka the Domains of Dread). Still with me so far?
Within the domain of Barovia, there is the valley of Barovia, from where the domain get it’s name. Barovia was once part of the material plane and was teleported to the Shadowfell (the plane of shadows). The valley was named Barovia after Strahd’s father Barov.
Within the valley of Barovia is the village of Barovia. The village was named after the valley. It served as the original seat of power before the castle was build.
Speaking of the castle, the confusing name trend continues. Castle Ravenloft was named after Strahd’s mother Ravenoia. Once the castle was finished it became the seat of power.
Ravenloft was the name of the original Curse of Strahd book, which only had the village of Barovia and Castle Ravenloft. The dread domain of Barovia was the only one that existed in lore at the time, and since the book was titled Ravenloft, the name grew to mean all of the Domains of dread.
